Torii YAMI (闇)
Inspired by the quiet power of the Japanese Torii gate - a symbol not of arrival, but of
transition - this piece exists in the space between function and meaning. It does not simply
offer a place to sit, it marks a moment.
Two separated planes form the seat - slightly misaligned, never fully touching. This
intentional distance becomes the essence of the object: a pause, a breath, a space for
awareness. Like passing through a Torii, the user moves from one state to another - from
movement into stillness.
The structure is grounded in solid wood, darkened to absorb light rather than reflect it. The
surface reveals subtle textures - traces of the material’s memory - while the form remains
restrained, almost architectural. A single contrasting element at its core acts as a silent axis,
a point of tension and balance.
Minimal yet expressive, TORII is not designed to dominate a space, but to define it. It
organizes the surrounding environment through presence rather than volume - a sculptural
gesture that invites interaction without demanding attention.
It is a seat.
It is a boundary.
